'Unconscious Casualty' In East Cowes Prompts Emergency Response

An unconscious 25 year old woman in the river near East Cowes has prompted a call-out for emergency teams this afternoon (Saturday).

Ambulance crews, Cowes RNLI lifeboat and Bembridge Coastguard Rescue were called to Kingston at 1.45pm.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has also been called to the incident.

The woman said to be in the care of ambulance teams.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said:

'At 1.45pm today (24 April), HM Coastguard received a 999 call from a member of the public about a woman in need of medical attention at a floating pontoon at Kingston Marine. Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team and the Cowes RNLI were sent, alongside Hampshire Constabulary and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service. The casualty was located and transferred into the care of the ambulance service.'

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said:

'We were called at 1.57pm this afternoon (Saturday 24 April) to a report of a concern for safety on Kingston Road, East Cowes.

'Officers were deployed to the scene where a woman was located and taken to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment.

'The incident is being treated as an accident and is not under investigation.'

**UPDATED 5.20pm

A spokesperson for Cowes RNLI said:

'The woman had apparently fallen backwards as she attempted to sail in a brisk south-easterly wind, and during the incident twice knocked her head and received pelvic injuries as well as a possible spinal injury.'
