Uncertainty Over Future Of Island's Hays Travel Employees

Uncertainty surrounds the future of the Isle of Wight's Hays Travel staff after the firm confirmed more than 800 employees would be let go.

The travel operator has announced it will cut up to 878 jobs out of a workforce of 4,500.

The Island has three branches - one in Shanklin, Ryde and Newport.

The company partly blames quarantine rules for holidaymakers returning from Spain, which has triggered the cancellation of hundreds of thousands of trips abroad.

Owners John and Irene Hays told Sky News:

"We are devastated that after all of our efforts and the huge investment we've made we now face losing some of our valued employees, through no fault of their own.

"Following the decision to ban travel to Spain and the changes in furlough conditions coming at the same time, we have had no choice."

We've asked the firm for a comment.
