Two Isle Of Wight MPs? Latest Constituency Plans Revealed

Much-talked about plans to split the Isle of Wight into two constituencies have been revealed.

Initial proposals, published by The Boundary Commission for England (BCE), show the Island divided by West and East.

Two MPs would work across the constituencies, with one taking the West side and other taking the East.

Although larger in size, the West would have an electorate of just 54,712 and would encompass places such as Cowes, Freshwater and part of Newport, where there will be a divide across the River Medina.

While the East would be smaller geographically but have a larger electorate of 57,004. It would be made up of the other half of Newport, Ryde, Bembridge, Shanklin and Sandown - among other areas.

Proposals would increase the number of English constituencies from 533 to 543.

The biggest shake-up of constituencies will be in the South East, where the number will rise from 84 to 91.

Every constituency must, by law, contain between 69,724 and 77,062 Parliamentary electors. The Isle of Wight has been given special dispensation to this rule.

Islanders are being invited to have their say over the proposals here - http://www.bcereviews.org.uk/.

An eight-week consultation launches on August 2, 2021.
