Smoke seen coming from a home on a main road north of Newport brought crews from two of the Island's fire stations yesterday.

Reports around 2.39pm on Saturday (October 9) sent firefighters from the town and from Cowes to a house at Horsebridge Hill.

There were no flames, according to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service — the smoke reported earlier was thought to be from cooking fumes.

Paramedics attended, firefighters said, to check one man for symptoms of smoke inhalation.

After stopping their operation at 3.02pm, crews confirmed the alert was a "false alarm with good intent".
