Mr Rees was a popular figure and played an important role in various key projects on the Island over the years.

Mr Rees died on May 13, aged 86.

The leader of the Isle of Wight Council, Councillor Dave Stewart, said:

“On behalf of everyone connected with the council I would like to recognise the contribution Harry Rees made to our Island.

“He had a long record of public service on the Island and I will cherish his informative and sometimes challenging questions and contributions to the policy development of the council.

“We had many discussions on assisted area status and economic development on the Island and it is those engagements which I shall particularly remember.

“My condolences to his family. Harry led a full and active life and we have a debt of gratitude to him.”
