Thousands Of Islanders Are Taking Part In Walk The Wight

Thousands of Islanders are taking part in Walk the Wight today (Sunday).

The walk is Mountbatten’s largest fundraising event and in the past has raised as much as £300,000.

This year, ‘The Final Stretch’ has been added to the choice of walks, covering the final four miles of the main route, while there is also a fancy-dress competition, with a family ticket to Camp Bestival up for grabs for the winner.

Nigel Hartley, Mountbatten CEO, said:

"We cannot stress how important it is people take part in Walk the Wight, this year more than ever.

“We are desperately trying to recover after two very challenging years and we need our community to help us get there.

“Whether it is walking for fun, a challenge, or in memory of a loved one, please come and join us.

“Whether you raise thousands, or simply give us a small donation, it all helps us continue to be there for Islanders when they need us most.”

The Final Stretch, from Freshwater Bay to Alum Bay, is one of five walk options available.

The main route from Bembridge to Alum Bay covers 26.5 miles, though walkers can opt for just the first or second half.

The eight-mile Flat Walk along the cycle path from Sandown to Newport is a gentler option.

People can sign up between 6am-8am this morning.
