Appley Seafront - thanks to Ryde Rescue

Businesses at Appley Seafront affected by Southern Water works to repair a sinkhole have received an 'initial' financial pay-out.

Exclusive:

Isle of Wight Radio understands thousands of pounds has been given to two businesses as a 'support package'.

Southern Water has also said 'sorry' to the businesses involved. A sinkhole was first discovered in January - forcing them to close.

As previously reported by Isle of Wight Radio, the works were meant to go on for a few weeks but are continuing.

When asked, Southern Water would not reveal how much money was being paid out to the companies.

A spokesperson for the company told Isle of Wight Radio:

'We are very sorry to both these business owners for the disruption caused by our crucial work to repair the burst main in Appley.

'In recognition of the immediate impact of our works we have agreed an initial support package. We are continuing discussions with them to understand and assess the ongoing impact of the works so we can provide appropriate and timely support where required.

'We are working to be away from the area as quickly as possible.'
