Test And Trace: Isle Of Wight Council’s 700K Government Funding Boost

The Isle of Wight Council has received an additional £700,000 from the Government, as part of plans to develop the NHS test and trace program locally.

A £300 million support package was announced by the Health Secretary, Matt Hancock last month (May) for councils across the country.

The leader of the Isle of Wight Council, Councillor Dave Stewart says the money will ensure the Island community can ‘remain safe and supported’.

He said:

“In line with what the secretary of state for health and social care has outlined, the funding will allow us to progress a response very much tailored to any outbreak situation if it arises on the Island.

“We are currently in the process of working on our outbreak plans and evaluating the latest government guidance, which will help us determine how this vital funding will be most effectively used.

“This will further support the already robust process in place on the Island to enable people to be tested and for localised tracing."

Meanwhile, the Island’s MP Bob Seely has also welcomed the support.

He said:

“This additional support from the Government is welcome. It will assist the council to deliver their plans to help the Island through the Covid-19 outbreak.

“All additional support is welcome at this time and I will continue to push the Government for further support, not only for the council but for all those who need it. This is my top priority.”

As previously reported, the test and trace figures have been described as ‘promising’ so far, however, the contact tracing app being trialled on the Island, which is part of the program -  is still yet to be rolled out nationwide.
