A total of 88% of people have been reached over the last week and agreed to self-isolate - as part of the test, track and trace program - to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Baroness Dido Harding, who heads the scheme, says 8,117 people had their case transferred to the programme after testing positive for COVID-19.

Of those, 67% were reached and asked to provide contacts, which led to 31,794 people being identified. 88% were contacted and agreed to self-isolate.

According to the data, 79% of people who tested positive for the virus were reached within 24 hours. A further 14% were reached within 48 hours.

Speaking at the daily news briefing Baroness Harding said:

"Together we know there are further improvements we can make to the system. The system is working well at scale...We will keep learning, improving and refining."

Matt Hancock insists the first week of operating the system 'paints a positive picture', he said:

"As we work through our plan, and we keep driving this virus down, let us keep that spirit and fortitude"

He added that the Government wants to introduce the human contact tracers before the technology.
