Swan Back On-Song After Crashing Into Carisbrooke Vet’s House

A young swan has received a clean bill of health after crashing into an Isle of Wight vet’s house during a storm.

The cygnet is back on-song after spending several days recovering in Carisbrooke, before being transferred to the RSPCA animal rescue centre, near Godshill.

It appears the juvenile bird had not quite earnt its wings when it crashed into the side of a house, during a recent storm.

The initial inspection at Green, Roberts and Butler showed the animal had suffered soft tissue damage.

The feathered friend was then transferred to the animal rescue centre at Bohemia Corner for further care.

RSPCA Isle of Wight branch manager, Suzanne Pugh said:

“We are not completely sure what caused the cygnet to crash into the house.

“It may well have been caught in a gust of wind during a storm or just didn’t realise the wall was coming up as it is still a juvenile.

“Fortunately, a neighbour saw the incident and alerted the residents of the house who were at home at the time. As good fortune would have it, it turned out one of the homeowners is a local veterinarian that the shelter partners with.”

It may take a few more flying lessons before the swan makes Top Gun.

Suzanne continued:

“The swan was very lucky both to have survived the impact and then to have found itself in the immediate care of a respected local vet.

“We were thrilled to play our part in the recuperation and release, and we hope that the cygnet learns from its experience.”

The bird’s return to swan-lake, near the 8 Bells pub, went swimmingly - as shown in this video by the IW RSPCA branch.
