'Stunning': Sandown Named Best Walking Location In The Country

Sandown

Sandown on the Isle of Wight has been named the best walking location in the UK.

Research by Coast and Country Hotel Collection looked at 30 different locations across the country and Sandown topped the list.

The study took the following into consideration; the number of walking and hiking routes in the area, average temperatures in each area through autumn, the percentage of woodland coverage and the number of National Trust properties. They then scored each location out of 10.

Sandown scored 7.4. As well as having six popular hiking trails nearby, the area is close to 12 National Trust properties, including Borthwood Copse which is situated in ancient oak woodland and presents an ideal walking route through colourful autumn leaves.

Following on from this was St Ives in Cornwall, with a score of 6.2 and coming in third with a score of six was Weymouth in Dorset.

The top 10 walking locations to enjoy in autumn were:

  1. Sandown, 7.4

  2. St Ives, 6.2

  3. Weymouth, 6

  4. Eastbourne, 5.8

  5. Ilfracombe, 5.6

  6. Weston-super-Mare, 5.4

  7. St Mawes, 5.2

  8. Hunstanton, 5.2

  9. Hexham, 5

  10. Torquay, 5

Paul FitzGerald, Portfolio Managing Director from the company said:

“Going on a walking holiday in the autumn is the best time to do so, visitors can see amazing landscapes changing colour and there are no weather expectations like there is in the summertime.

“The Isle of Wight is stunning all year round, so it's not surprising it came out top in our research. The bright autumn days are perfect for getting out and about and enjoying the seasonal colours.”
