St Mary's Hospital Sees Number Of COVID Patients Double In A Week

The number of COVID-19 patients at St Mary's Hospital has doubled in a week.

Public Health England data shows that, as of Tuesday (24), there were 17 patients in the Island's hospital with the illness. At the same time last week that figure was at eight.

Three people, meanwhile, were in mechanical ventilation beds.

It comes in the week that the Isle of Wight NHS Trust announced all inpatient wards would close to visitors, due to a rise in COVID patient numbers.

At the time, a spokesperson for the trust said:

"The decision to restrict visiting across the site is not one we have taken lightly but due to the continuing rise in COVID-19 patients being treated at the hospital, we must put the safety of our patients and staff first."

There are three exceptions where visitors can attend, these are:

  • a patient that is nearing end of life
  • a child who is an inpatient on the Children’s Ward
  • a birthing partner to the Labour Ward

Yesterday (Thursday) Isle of Wight Radio revealed how the Island's vaccination roll-out is progressing.

Latest data shows almost 100,000 people on the Isle of Wight have now been double-jabbed.
