St George's Way Works Mean Temporary Home For Taxis And Buses

Photo from Google Maps.

Six months of works at St George's Way in Newport are underway.

Not only does it mean diversions for motorists, but also changes to where Islanders can catch taxis and buses from.

We've put together a handy guide...

Buses

Southern Vectis had been using Church Litten to depart from due to social distancing measures in place at Newport's bus station.

But, with the Isle of Wight Council now needing the road as a diversion route, some routes have been moved to South Street.

This includes routes 5, 7, 12 and 38.

Taxis

As the council looked to move buses to South Street, it meant the two taxi ranks on the road had to be relocated.

Initial plans suggested the rank outside Peacocks and Morrisons be temporarily moved to St James' Street.

This didn't go down well with cabbies though, who claimed there had been no consultation.

The council soon backtracked and has now set up base for the taxis in Church Litten car park.

Parking has been temporarily revoked so drivers will have to find alternatives.

St George's Way turns one-way

The first planned closure from the Furrlongs exit to St George's Way is now in place, according to Island Roads.

From Monday (15), there will be further changes. You can read more here.

Traffic will not be able to come from Pan/Furrlongs onto St George's Way.

A one-way system will also come into place past Church Litten and South Street.

The Isle of Wight Council is planning to widen the road to "improve traffic flows" in this area of the town.
