Southampton's Boat Show Opening 'Grounded' After Last Minute Decision

The Ocean Village Boat Show in Southampton has been forced to cancel its opening, which was scheduled for today (Friday).

The organiser of the show, MDL Marinas, said it has been told by Southampton City Council that the event cannot open.

In a statement, the show said that it has aimed to develop a show that offers visitors a controlled and safe experience, and was to operate an appointment only system.

Sales and Marketing Director, Tim Mayer, said:

"As we have done over many weeks, we are working with Southampton City Council’s events advisory committee to establish if we can open the show later in the week.

"But we wanted to let you know that the show will not open [today] (Friday 11 Sept), and we ask our booked customers not to come to Ocean Village."

The show hopes to liaise with the Council to see if the show can go ahead later in the week.

Tim added:

“We are naturally very disappointed for all of our exhibitors, and visitors, who have all made significant investments into the show - whether to bring wonderful power and sail boats, or to travel to the city to look at a boat.

“If we are able to open our show later this week, we will contact those who have previously booked to let them know what happens next however your broker may well contact you to rearrange your appointment.”
