Swimmers have been emerging from the water at Colwell, after making their ways across the Solent.

Today's West Wight Solent Swim reportedly began with participants entering the water at Hurst, on the mainland, around 4.50am.

It's the year's biggest fundraiser for the West Wight Sports and Community Centre in Freshwater.

The night before, charity officials said they believed 56 swimmers would be taking part.

To qualify, participants were expected to prove they could accomplish 100 lengths of the charity's own pool.

According to the centre, the event has raised more than £200,000 since it started in 2011.

However, this year's event was postponed a fortnight ago, after wind conditions made the crossing unsafe.

A fleet of experienced kayakers, plus motorboats and lifeboats including crews from the Freshwater Independent Lifeboat, escorted the swimmers.

After the swim, the charity thanked participants:

"Where to start with all the thank yous?

"Dave Lutas for organising the kayakers, Freshwater Independent Lifeboat, Needles Pleasure Cruises for transport, IslandFX for hot dogs, our team of amazing volunteers from across the community, our staff, Yarmouth Harbour, Bembridge Harbour (for loan of radios), Needles Coastwatch, all the supporters who turned up at the unearthly hour, boat skippers (for safety support and transport), all the kayakers, Wight Productions - Videographer & Photographer (for photos).

"But most of all - THE SWIMMERS - you are all awesome.

"Thank you so much everyone for supporting West Wight Sports & Community Centre."

This is how the Solent Swim starts...before daylight, aboard Yarmouth Rose departing Yarmouth for Hurst. Thank you...
