Smoke Sighting Leads To Coastguard Callout

A sighting of smoke on the water led to a callout for rescue teams on the Isle of Wight yesterday (Saturday).

HM Coastguard received reports from concerned members of the public of 'white smoke' on the sea, visible South East of Ventnor, shortly after 3pm.

Volunteers from Sandown and Shanklin Independent Lifeboat and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Teams were paged to respond and investigate the sightings, with fears of someone in trouble at sea.

A short search by the teams, including making contact with several vessels in the area, revealed that no one was in difficulty and the search was stood down.

Despite this call being classed as a 'false alarm with good intent', HM Coastguard reminds people to always report anything you believe could be someone in difficulty at sea or on the coast by calling them on 999.
