Smashed It! Floating Bridge Windows Damaged As It Moors

Windows on the Floating Bridge have been smashed as it tried to moor up on its return to the Isle of Wight today (Monday).

The chain ferry returned to the Isle of Wight this morning, after undergoing its five-yearly safety inspection.

It was due to be back in service between Cowes and East Cowes next week.

However, as it attempted to moor up in East Cowes today, the vessel hit the dockside.

A video sent to Isle of Wight Radio shows the moment the vessel attempted to dock.

It resulted in one shattered window — and another with a gaping hole.

Speaking to Isle of Wight Radio, councillor Karl Love said:

"I’m happy to say our bridge is back - however, our floating bridge returned in its usual spectacular way of causing headlines as it crashes accidentally into the wall.

"Accidents do happen but this floating bridge just seem to have a mind of its own.

"Its as though it just does not want to be here without making a statement its own!

"It is very windy out there today and I know another staff will have done their best. It seems the wind and tide have got the better of them today."

An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said:

“Whilst manoeuvring the vessel into its temporary berth it made contact with the GKN wall; two windows were broken. These are on the south side of the vessel and will be boarded up tomorrow.

“It is not anticipated that this will impact the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) inspection or return to service date of 13 April 2022.”
