Hedgehog rescued from Parkhurst

Do you live in or around Parkhurst in Newport? There has been a rise in hedgehog deaths in the area because of slug pellets, according to volunteers who respond to call-outs.

On Sunday, Isle of Wight Hedgehog Rescue saved an orphan hoglet who’s Mother was killed on the Camp Hill Estate. Volunteer Will Taylor, who made the rescue, told Isle of Wight Radio he was found ‘wandering in a garden near to where his Mother last was’.

This is the charity’s 69th rescue this year, which adds to its record year for rescues.

However, over the last couple of weeks, two dead hoglets have been discovered in Parkhurst and it is understood they were poisoned by slug pellets.

Therefore, the charity is pleading with Islanders not to use slug pellets in their garden, as they result in a 'horrendous death' for hedgehogs.

Earlier this year, Isle of Wight Radio went to visit the ‘hedgehog hospital’ in Seaview run by Jaqui Wilson, who managed to breed hedgehog triplets in captivity for the first time on the Isle of Wight, as exclusively reported by Isle of Wight Radio.
