A sinking yacht that became grounded off the coast between Sandown and Shanklin is causing concern to officials regarding pollution from its fuel.

Coastguards have confirmed to Isle of Wight Radio that there are signs of diesel pollution on the foreshore — a matter reported to Isle of Wight Council.

Information about about the 30ft yacht was received shortly before 8am.

The Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team attended to assess the vessel, which did not have anyone onboard.

A witness at the scene said officials were asking people people to stay off the beach, and out of the water, near the Tradewinds Cafe.

An affected area along the shoreline has been taped off by HM Coastguard and signs put in place to advise the public of the pollution.

Coastguards added that the owner of the yacht has been contacted and the situation is being continually monitored by the Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s Counter Pollution Team and Isle of Wight Council.
