Shanklin Secure Historic Double After Cup Final Win

Shanklin have secured a historic league and cup football double.

The Blues clinched the Challenge Cup after beating Whitecroft and Barton (W&B) last night (Tuesday).

In front of a crowd of more than 200 people, it was W&B who were out for revenge after Shanklin pipped them to the league title earlier this month.

It was Shanklin who had the chance to take the lead inside the first 15 minutes, but Pete Wilson saw his header saved by W&B goalkeeper, Kevin Mitchell - who then also denied Wayne Newnham from scoring.

The lively Josh Appell and Sam Yelland both had chances to put the Reds in front, before Shanklin were awarded a penalty when George Carter-Knight was brought down. Captain Iain Seabrook - playing his final match for the Blues - stepped up, but his spot kick was saved by Mitchell.

In a scrappy start to the second half, both teams started applying more pressure, with chances for Liam Slaven and Yelland for W&B and Seabrook again for Shanklin.

Just after the hour mark struck, it was W&B's turn to be awarded a penalty when Seabrook was penalised for a handball - which appeared to hit his shoulder - inside the box. Matt Evans stepped up, but his strike was saved spectacularly by Sean Phillips down to his left, to keep the sides level.

As the game looked destined to go to penalties, Neo Lamb picked up the ball inside the W&B and set off on a jinking run into the area, dropping his shoulder left and right, before poking his shot into the corner of the W&B net, with just over ten minutes left to play.

Moments later, Seabrook almost doubled Shanklin's lead from a free-kick, but man-of-the-match, Mitchell pulled off another good save.

Shanklin manager, Paul Haward, said:

"I think everyone is absolutely shattered after a long, but very successful season. The boys deserve huge credit for what they have achieved this year. To win the league and now the cup makes it extra special.

"I’m delighted for the lads, the committee, the management and the club as a whole. It's been a great season."
