Shanklin On Brink Of League Title After Dramatic Late Win

Shanklin are on the brink of a dramatic Isle of Wight Saturday Football League Division One title, after beating leaders, Whitecroft & Barton (W&B).

Shanklin went into last night’s match at the County Ground five points behind W&B, but crucially with an extra game to play.

In a fiesty match - in front of a crowd of more than 200 - it was Shanklin who opened the scoring inside five minutes, when Iain Seabrook cooly converted a penalty.

But the lead didn’t last long, as Josh Appell levelled shortly after for the visitors.

Both sides had chances to go into the break in the lead, but a combination of good goalkeeping by Dan Ward and Gareth True kept the scores even.

W&B only needed a point to clinch another league title - but Shanklin were determined to do all they could to stop that from happening.

With the minutes running down, W&B were reduced to 10-men when Matt Evans was sinbinned - followed by a straight red card for defender, Jake Wright, leaving the away side with nine men to close the game.

In a dramatic final few minutes, it looked as though W&B had done enough - but Shanklin’s Ryan Hill had other ideas. Deep into injury time, the midfielder found space inside the area to stab his shot into the back of the net, sparking wild celebrations among the home players and fans, to make it 2-1.

With W&B’s season now over, Shanklin travel to Brading Town on Saturday (14) , knowing a win will secure the league title.

Shanklin Manager, Paul Haward, told Isle of Wight Radio:

“I’m so proud of how well the lads have done so far this season, but now it all comes down to Saturday. We know it’ll be a tough game against Brading Town.”
