Shanklin Keep The Pressure On With Home Win

Shanklin have kept the pressure on Isle of Wight Saturday League 1 leaders, W&B, with a second win in four days.

After edging out Cowes Sports Reserves 3-2 at Westwood Park on Saturday (17), Shanklin faced Ryde Saints at the County Ground last night.

The hosts took the lead inside the first 15 minutes when midfield general, Wayne Newnham, finished coolly into the top corner after some good build up play.

The advantage was almost doubled soon after, but George Carter-Knight's shot was saved well by Ryde Saints' goalkeeper, Ben Orton.

Early in the second half, Shanklin were punished for not taking their chances. Ryan Hill was booked when he gave away a free kick 25 yards outside his own box. Conor Lyon stepped up and rifled his shot past Shanklin 'keeper, Jack Powell, to make it 1-1.

Minutes later, Hill stylishly made up for his error, when he slotted a perfectly weighted ball through to striker, Ji Nash, who fired the ball home to give Shanklin all three points. They now sit just two points behind leaders, W&B, whose game against Vectis FC was called off - giving the points to W&B.

Elsewhere, third placed Brading Town beat Northwood, 1-0. There were also wins for Bembridge, Binstead & COB, Sandown and West Wight.
