Ryde Beach Lifeguards (RBLG) - which operates the Beach Lifeguard services in both Ryde and Sandown - welcomed their Rookie Lifeguards back this summer, with 80 children taking part in the program.
The programme is spread over six days in August, teaching children aged 8 to 15 years old valuable lifesaving skills, following the Royal Life Saving Society curriculum.
The Rookies learnt about tides, currents, waves and much more, as well as first aid training and lifesaving skills in the swimming pool and sea.
All Rookie Lifeguards obtained Rookie Lifesaving Awards, alongside specialisms for the Beach.
Two of those - Noah Girling and Eleanor Rice - obtained their Bronze Star Awards and will be working towards their Bronze Medallions in the winter months.
Todd Miller, Beach Manager, said:
“The Rookie Lifeguard programme is something we all thoroughly enjoy delivering and is the future of lifesaving on the Island.
"Two of our Rookie Lifeguards that have taken part in the programme for a number of years, will be going onto complete their RLSS Beach and Pool Lifeguard Courses in 2025.
"Most importantly, the skills our Rookies learn with us, could help save someone's life one day”
