School Meal Decision Not Sole Reason For Rising Numbers At Isle Of Wight Foodbank

Isle Of Wight Foodbank Volunteers

The Isle of Wight Foodbank has seen more Islanders using its service in recent weeks - but the Government’s decision not to extend free school meals is not the only reason behind the rise, according to the Foodbank.

Volunteers say numbers declined after the initial wave at the start of the first lockdown, as Government schemes stepped in to support people - fewer relied on the service.

But the Trussell Trust, which supports more than 1,200 food bank centres across the country has warned the site in Cowes could see a 61% increase in numbers from October to the Christmas period.

In the same period last year, the foodbank supported 950 Islanders.

But it is now making preparations to feed around 1,500 in response to the warning from the Trussell Trust.

Hannah Hood, PR and Events Co-ordinator for the Foodbank told Isle of Wight Radio:

“It’s the non-perishables we need - the ones with the long shelf life - continue to drop them off at your local supermarket or bring them to the warehouse in Cowes...To continue supporting us would be fantastic”

“We are beginning to see an increase - some of this is to do with the free school meals, some of it is to do with other crisis’ that goes on in life. We can’t yet tell how much of that increase could be to do with the free school meals.”

Islanders have been thanked for their support so far and fundraising efforts.
