Scam Alert: Islanders Warned Of Bogus Calls And Emails

Have you received a suspicious email or an odd phone call on the Isle of Wight recently?

Trading standards is warning Islanders about a call purporting to be from BT where the person claims to be in your local area checking download and connection speeds before asking you to “run a speed test”.

They then tell you to press window + R which will allow them remote access on your device - but you must hang up as it is a scam.

Islanders are also being warned to stay vigilant when checking their emails, there have been reports of a bogus one from the UK Government claiming your grant has been approved and it asks you to click on the link.

Another email, purporting to be from TV Licensing alleges that your licence could not be renewed automatically and it asks you to set up a new direct debit.

Both the UK Government and TV Licensing will not contact you in this way - it is a scam.

You can forward the emails to [email protected]
