Sandown Bay's Hullabaloo Festival Goes Online For Islanders

Sandown Bay's nature and arts festival ‘Hullabaloo’ will go ahead this year but coronavirus has forced it to happen behind closed doors this year instead.

Eight Isle of Wight musicians and artists are aiming to bring the Isle of Wight Biosphere event to life ‘virtually’ for us all later this month (June).

Islanders will be able to go online to walk 'virtually' through the community-led festivities and participate in a range of activities from animation to origami, birdsong to printmaking and much more.

Nicole Hurrell, Hullabaloo and Shademakers' youngest co-ordinator said:

‘I have lived in Sandown all my life and it’s such an important place to me. When we got the chance to start Hullabaloo, it was such an exciting process to be able to show how amazing the Bay really is. Shifting online due to Coronavirus rather than cancelling means we can still go ahead to help people celebrate as well as continue to support our creative community.

‘I’m used to coordinating the colour and carnival of Hullabaloo so it’s a challenge going all-virtual, but the artists commissions have really inspired me and I love the aspect of getting any audience, not just on the Island, to join in with this part of the event – here’s to making it all come alive online in June!’

Some of the artists that will feature include:

  • Musicians Paul Armfield and Jon Thorne will bring you the ‘Bay Air'
  • Graphic designer Claire Speight translates her local nature trail the Willow Walk into letterpress and book-binding
  • Quay Arts’ Ian Whitmore’s interest in the Island’s natural history collection helps us create our own ‘butterfly collection’ at home.

The event will launch on June 19 and go 'LIVE' on the weekend of Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June.

Hullabaloo How-To videos are online already so get started making decorations, party food, tents, dens, stages, posters, arenas, bars, costumes - so you can transform your home into the arts/science festival.
