Ryde Regatta Organisers Seeking Compensation After Cancellation

Organisers of Ryde Regatta say ongoing works in Appley have left them with no choice but to cancel this year's event.

Ryde Rowing Club, which runs the regatta from its base in Appley, says it is seeking compensation from Southern Water for loss of earnings.

Today (Saturday) would've seen Islanders flock to Ryde for the annual celebration.

However, with engineers working to repair damage to an overflow outfall in Appley, it is no longer possible for the event to continue.

It's the second year in a row it has had to be cancelled. Last year it was called off due to COVID-19.

Southern Water has been carrying out works in the area since January, when a sinkhole appeared in the footpath.

Businesses in the area have already received pay-outs due to the ongoing disruption, as Isle of Wight Radio exclusively revealed.

We've asked Southern Water whether it intends to pay compensation to Ryde Rowing Club.
