Ryde Pier Toll 'Abolished' — But Wightlink Adds Extra Cost To FastCat Sailings

Wightlink says it's abolishing the toll for those driving up Ryde Pier — but it means passengers travelling on its FastCat service will now have to pay more.

A £1.30 pier toll was originally introduced to fund yearly maintenance to Britain's oldest pier. Instead, a new 50p charge will be added to individual FastCat crossings to supplement repair costs.

The ferry firm says it's made the decision following customer feedback, and to reduce traffic congestion.

Wightlink Chief Executive Keith Greenfield says:

“Abolishing the toll and removing the barrier will reduce delays for people wanting to drive up to the FastCat terminal, making for an easier journey especially for commuters.”

It costs around £250,000 a year to keep the 207-year-old listed structure in a safe working condition.

The extra charge to FastCat sailings will not affect Multilink, Season Ticket or Business Pass holders.

Changes will come into effect from Wednesday (21).
