Ryde Man Recovering From 'Life-Changing' Strokes Walks Wight

Richard Laird

An Islander who's recovering from two 'life-changing' strokes is walking the Wight in 92 days.

61 year old Richard Youni Laird from Ryde will start the challenge on February 6 and complete do a lap a day -  until the day of Walk The Wight (May 9).

The former taxi driver told Isle of Wight Radio he can't do the full 80 miles in one go because of his health.

Instead, inspired by Captain Tom, Richard will do laps around his estate in Sutton Close, Ryde.

He explained why he chose to raise money for Mountbatten:

"My younger brother - Mountbatten looked after his children fantastically, he had two young children and they gave them counselling to prepare them for the death of their dad and they helped them afterwards.

"It's not just a place to go to die - they do so much more.

"Walk the Wight is their biggest fundraiser. I can't do it but I am still going to do what I can do."
