REVEALED: COVID Care Home Deaths On The Isle Of Wight

A care watchdog has published figures showing where COVID was involved in deaths in care homes across the Isle of Wight.

Scroll for the figures...

The data spans just under a year, from April 10, 2020, to March 31, 2021, covering all three lockdowns and the height of the pandemic in January this year when cases and deaths rocketed.

During that time period, 129 deaths were notified involving Covid-19.

It shows the highest number of deaths involving Covid 19 happened in the final quarter of the timeframe, between January and March, with 88 across 18 individual CQC-registered care homes.

In the middle part of the year, over quarters two and three, only three deaths happened, at Kinloch Tay Residential Care Home, Sandown Nursing Home and Cherry Blossom Care Home.

The data comes from death notices submitted by the care providers, so does not show where Covid was contracted by the person, or that they may have died elsewhere — but as it was a patient in their care home a notice had to be submitted.

The most death notices received from a single care home was The Briars, in Sandown. where 15 people died with Covid-19, from April to March 2021 — with 11 happening in quarter four.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has released the information having waited until it was less likely to have a serious impact of continuity of care, had someone used the information to make decisions that inadvertently put people at wider risk.

It says the impact of the pandemic on people who draw on and work in adult social care services has been devastating and despite the best efforts of staff, COVID-19 has contributed to a significant increase in the number of deaths in nursing and residential care settings.

The regulatory body said throughout the pandemic the CQC encouraged care providers to be open with people in their care and loved ones about the circumstances around people’s deaths.
