Respects Paid To 'Greatly Loved' Doughnut At Isle Of Wight Donkey Sanctuary

Isle Of Wight Donkey Sanctuary

The 'greatly loved' donkey called Doughnut has died at the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary.

Staff say she was cared for by vets on-site and the Equine Vets at Liphook hospital but 'tragically' she passed away yesterday (Sunday).

It was after she suffered what's been described as a 'sudden relapse'.

Following surgery, staff say she appeared to be recovering and on the mend. She was also integrated into the OAP herd for her retirement years.

However, it's understood her internal problems could not be located on various scans.

Issuing a statement on the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary's Facebook Page, staff paid their respects and said:

'Doughnut was a star! In her younger days she was an active therapy donkey who was well known amongst local schools and Residential homes. She formed a happy partnership with Sooty and they even ventured to the mainland spending several happy days at Wellington Vale home in Waterlooville.

'Doughnut retired to the OAP group and she could be readily identified by her tongue hanging out of the side of her mouth! She had very few teeth and needed frequent dental treatment to cope with food. Nonetheless, she was enthusiastic about eating and was quick to let the staff know when it was meal time!

'The last 24 hours have been devastating for everybody associated with Doughnut. We tried everything we could to help her and give her chance of an extended life. Sadly it just was not to be.'
