Repairs And Investigations Continue Into Ryde Sinkhole

Extensive works to investigate and repair a large sinkhole discovered in Ryde are continuing.

The large sinkhole appeared on the footpath, opposite Appley Cafe and the Cadet Beach Club restaurant, in January.

The whole area by Ryde Canoe Lake and Appley Walk remains closed to motorists.

Following geotechnical surveys carried out by Southern Water in recent weeks, the company has said that no further holes or voids have been found.

Southern Water is continuing to investigate the sewer, how it collapsed, and the extent of the damage caused. Teams are accessing it via an existing chamber downstream of the sinkhole.

An over-pumping system is being installed to enable Southern Water to carry out work safely and allow for follow-up works, while also keeping the pipe clear for a camera.

Tony Knott, Senior Project Manager, Wastewater Networks Southern Water, said:

“We wish to reassure everyone that work continues as a priority on the collapsed sewer at Appley Beach and we are sorry for the inconvenience this is causing.

“Public safety remains our priority, therefore, when there is no site activity planned, manned security is employed to ensure that security of the installation is maintained and public safety is upheld.

“We thank locals and visitors for their ongoing patience while we work to safely reinstate the sewer which services all of Ryde’s wastewater removal.”
