Quick-thinking staff and local residents have been praised for helping to stop a fire spreading in Totland.

Firefighters from Totland and Freshwater were called to The Broadway around 9pm last night (Monday).

A refrigeration unit was reported to be on fire.

Staff managed to isolate the incident, with help from local residents who raised the alarm.

Friends of Freshwater Fire Station said:

"Freshwater’s H79P1 and Yarmouth’s H80P1 just returned from a refrigeration unit fire in Totland.

"After extinguishing and cooling the unit it was made safe before crews stood down.

"Quick thinking employees at the site isolated the electrical supply prior to fire crew arrival and a neighbour of the property used a Co2 extinguisher to suppress the flames.

"All of these fast actions prevented the incident being much worse than it could have been."
