Police Crackdown On Speeding Isle Of Wight Motorists And Motorcyclists

Facebook: Isle of Wight Police

Police have been cracking down on speeding motorists, motorcyclists and anti-social vehicles.

The Island's Armed Response Vehicles/Roads Policing Team were joined by colleagues from the Joint Operations Unit Roads Policing Team, including three police motorcycles and unmarked cars, on Sunday (16).

The teams were cracking down on anti-social vehicles and motorcycles across the Isle of Wight, as part of Operation Wightwash.

Posting on the Isle of Wight Police page on Facebook, officers said:

"Typical British summer weather !! Sunday morning was a complete washout with very heavy rain across the IOW. Despite that the team of three police motorcycles, proactive car and the IOW ARV/RP officers still went out conducting speed enforcement in the rain at some of our highlighted areas around the Military Road and surrounding villages.

"There were very few motorcycles or vehicles out and about at one point the fastest recorded road users were some hardy road cyclists coming from Blackgang into Niton…. ! That said, the team still had a lot of local support at being out.

"After drying out a bit and an improvement in the weather the team headed back out in the afternoon paying attention to some of our KSI – (killed seriously injured accident sites) and concentrating on speed enforcement and road safety messages.

"A number of vehicles were stopped with positive road safety education messages provided. A number of matters resulted in formal action being taken including : -

  • 12 x speed enforcement tickets issued
  • 1 x mobile phone use offence
  • 1 x altered noisy exhaust on a motorcycle (Yes this is an offence and does cause anti-social issues)
  • 1 x Dangerous load offence (Unfortunately this driver came across us at a check point with a full size trampoline insecurely strapped to the top of his car and protruding across into the opposite carriageway!!) Luckily they did not cause a crash, but a bit of time dismantling this would have prevented them receiving a ticket.

"The team were able to dedicate some time along the A3056 Apse Heath in the 30mph limit. This has become a bit of a hotspot with some recent serious injury accidents and police will continue to complete enforcement checks along here.

"All in all a positive day with some good feedback from MOP’s and local residents in support of our efforts.

"The teams will continue with further planned operations focusing our resources to address anti-social driving / riding, to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes by addressing our fatal four key areas (speeding / mobile phone use / seatbelts / drink drug driving)."
