Police Call On Fire Service To Save The Day After Handcuff Key Snaps In Lock

Facebook: Isle of Wight Police

The local police force called on Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service to save the day yesterday (Saturday), after a handcuff key snapped in its lock — with the detained person still inside them.

In a post on Isle of Wight Police Facebook page, Sgt Radford said:

"Yesterday, a male was arrested and handcuffed which is standard practise. Once at custody the handcuffs are removed, on this occasion it didn’t go quite to plan. One of our ARV/Traffic officers' key snapped inside the lock.

"I have personally never seen that before and although we can laugh about it now and give the officer some stick, officers had to go over to the fire station in Newport to ask for some help.

"The fire service came over very quickly with some tools and freed the male from the handcuffs and they were completely fine.

"It was one of the Response officers handcuffs, it was their second to last day on the frontline as they will be moving to another department. A fitting end for these handcuffs?

"The question is, what is the cake fine for the ARV/Traffic officer that broke them?"
