Police And Coastguard Teams Called To Shanklin Seafront

Police and coastguard teams have been called to Shanklin seafront this evening (Monday).

Emergency teams are on the scene at Shanklin Esplanade, near to the Fisherman’s Cottage pub.

It’s understood a person was reported to be in the water.

A bag has been recovered from the cliff top by coastguards.

A man has been placed in handcuffs by police on the seafront.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said:

"We were called at 5.28pm with reports of a public order incident on Shanklin Esplanade involving a man in the water.

"Police attended and a man in his 50s was initially arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in a public place and theft, before being taken to hospital

"He will face no further action in relation to the drunk and disorderly arrest, however remains under investigation in relation to theft.

"The theft relates to a suspected stolen ornamental crystal which was recovered by police during this incident."
