Owners Of 'Unsafe And Unhygienic' Hotel In Shanklin To Appeal Closure

The owners of a Shanklin hotel, closed due to health and safety concerns, say they will appeal the Isle of Wight Council's decision.

The proprietors of the Melbourne Ardenlea say allegations of 'unsafe' gas and electrical appliances are 'groundless', and they are 'confident' a tribunal will rule in their favour.

As Isle of Wight Radio previously reported, the Isle of Wight Council's Regulatory Services served a prohibition notice on the hotel following a visit on Friday (2).

Speaking to Isle of Wight Radio, a spokesperson for the hotel said they hope to reopen shortly:

"We believe the Prohibition Notices served are groundless and will be appealed In the tribunal, the Hotel had already provided all the certifications to the Isle of Wight Council including the gas appliances certificate issued by a competent and corgi registered commercial gas plumber along with the satisfactory electrical installation report in June 2021, The Hotel has always striven to maintain highest safety standards.

"The suspicious elements and activities behind the serving of these two notices are yet to be determined.

"Historically it is evident that some individuals within the IOW environmental health department have some personal vendetta against the hotel and also have intimidated several past and present members of Hotel staff.

"We are issuing an appeal and are confident the Prohibition Notices served will be set aside. We hope to be in a position to re-open shortly and thank our loyal satisfied guests and staff for their support."

“The Regulatory Services team were informed of concerns regarding the condition of the Melbourne Ardenlea Hotel, 4-6 Queen Road, Shanklin."

The Isle of Wight Council had previously said:

"The hotel was planning to open following the period of lockdown and it was alleged that since the premises had been closed conditions had deteriorated to an extent that it was unsafe and unhygienic.

“Investigations into these allegations have resulted in the service of prohibition notices served under The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 as there was reason to believe that the gas and electrical installation and appliances were unsafe and use of which could result in a risk of serious personal injury. In addition, a number of other areas of improvement and remedial works have been required to ensure that the premises complied with relevant legal requirements.

“The police were called by officers when they attended the hotel on Friday evening to provide assistance to officers in order to undertake their statutory duties.”

A note on the door of the hotel says it has been shut due to "unexpected maintenance".
