Osborne House Hosts Popular Blooming Gardens Weekend Event

Osborne House

The popular Blooming Gardens event is taking place at Osborne House this weekend.

It is a chance for Islanders to join in with an intimate annual celebration of horticultural heritage at Queen Victoria's home.

Garden staff will also be talking about what and how they prepare the site in East Cowes for the summer months.

There will also be displays of traditional gardening equipment, music by Jukebox Jazz and the Isle of Wight Symphony orchestra, as well as crafts, refreshments and stalls.

Toby Beasley has been the head gardener for 13 years, he works in a team of 11 and said "you can still imagine the Royals living here".

Toby told Isle of Wight Radio:

"It has magnificent views down to the sea and is such a great space. Right now is one of our busiest times of the year, we have a lot of grass cutting, weeding and also we are changing the bedding on the terraces so lots going on but it will all stand us in good stead for later on. In the next few weeks, the terraces will start looking absolutely fantastic with all the flowers coming out and the walled garden has already got plenty of flowers in bloom. Summer holidays are the peak time to see Osborne."

"The gardens around the house are probably the most spectacular area with lots of bedding plants on the terraces overlooking the sea, the walled garden is a nice secluded part of the estate and it is stuffed with herbaceous plants so lots of flowers through the summer."

Advance booking can be done online  https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/whats-on/osborne-blooming-gardens-12-13-june-2021/

The event is from 10am until 5pm today (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday).
