Nothing Found After 'Mayday' Alert Off Isle Of Wight

A mayday alert off the Isle of Wight coast prompted a call-out for coastguard teams earlier today (Wednesday).

An unknown station broadcast the message, leading to the coastguard helicopter and Yarmouth and Swanage RNLIs launching.

A search was carried out between Poole Bay and the Needles.

A HM Coastguard spokesperson said:

"HM Coastguard received a Mayday broadcast (at approx. 12.05pm) issued on Channel 16 VHF radio from an unknown station.

"RNLI lifeboats from Yarmouth and Swanage were sent as well as the coastguard helicopter from Lee-on-the-Solent to investigate, conducting searches between Poole Bay and the Needles, Isle of Wight.

"Nothing untoward was found."
