'No Oil Wells On Isle Of Wight': Environmental Campaigners Send Message To UKOG

Environmental campaigners in Ventnor

Environmental Campaigners have sent a message to UK Oil and Gas (UKOG) after it put forward an application to drill for oil on the Isle of Wight.

As previously reported by Isle of Wight Radio,  UKOG submitted the proposals earlier this month (June) to see if it could drill for oil in the future - as part of a three-year trial.

On Saturday morning, a small group of Environmental campaigners, who told Isle of Wight Radio they 'care passionately about our Island and our world' got up early to send a photo from Ventnor's paddling pool on the seafront, with a message saying 'No oil wells on the Isle of Wight'.

The group are encouraging Islanders of all ages to make comments on the planning application, which can be done via the council's website here.

A spokesperson for the group said:

“We owe this to the land, to nature and to future generations to protect the richness and diversity that we see on the Island. If people don’t take action and comment, then it could be passed. There is a time for taking action on this, and it is now”

Comments on the plans must be made by 24 July.

As previously reported, the Isle of Wight Council agreed to "aim" to cut emissions to zero on 24 July 2019.
