Newport Traffic Works: 'Significant Diversion' Planned As Council Reveals Next Phase

More traffic works are planned for Newport, after the controversial reconstruction of St Mary’s Junction.

An Isle of Wight councillor has revealed that ‘quite a significant diversion’ is planned through the Island’s main town, taking traffic past Marks and Spencer and Morrisons.

Cllr Ian Ward, cabinet member for infrastructure and transport, said he thought it would not cause problems for traffic in the town, telling a meeting on Thursday, “it might even be a good diversion.”

Part of the £9.6 million package given to the Isle of Wight Council by the government, for its Newport Strategic Junction Improvements, the second phase of works will now move ahead.

Plans to improve the link between Coppins Bridge and St George’s Way are in their final stages of design and if all goes well, the scheme is anticipated to be completed by early autumn, at the latest.

Speaking at the February meeting of the Isle of Wight Council’s leading cabinet, on Thursday February 11, Cllr Ward said work will now move to the next phase.

Part of the road that runs past Matalan and Cineworld, to Coppins Bridge, will be widened, improving traffic flow.

Last year’s work, changing St Mary’s Roundabout into a junction, was one of the biggest schemes of the strategic junction improvements, which also includes the creation of the Asda roundabout, linking Shide and St George’s Way.

The cash was expected to enable the delivery of new homes, boost economic productivity on the Island and improve provisions for cyclists and pedestrians.

No date has yet been set for when the work on St George’s Way will start.
