Newport Property Fire Prompts Arson Arrest

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life following a fire in Newport this morning (Wednesday).

 

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a kitchen fire at a property on Fairlee Road just after 4am.

Firefighters used one hose reel and two breathing apparatus to put the flames out.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Police say a Newport man detained on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life has also been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, and assaulting a police officer.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said:

"We were called at 4.08am this morning, 10 March, to reports of a fire at an address on Fairlee Road, Newport.

"No one was injured in the incident.

"A 22-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, criminal damage, and assaulting a police officer."

He remains in custody at this time.
