Newport And East Cowes Vics In Island Showdown

Isle of Wight bragging rights will be up for grabs tonight (Tuesday) when local rivals Newport and East Cowes Vics meet in a Wessex League Division One clash.

Newport will go into the game as favourites, sitting third in the table, while Vics are languishing in the bottom four.

But Vics boss Richie Woodburn still believes that on their day his young players are capable of beating any team in the division.

Richie said:

“Newport are in fantastic form, but if we apply ourselves, and give the same level of performance that we did when narrowly losing on Saturday, and stick to our game plan, then we will be in with a shout. We haven’t had the best of luck recently, so let’s hope this is an occasion when it turns our way.

“It is a derby game, and I don’t think Newport will be looking forward to it too much, because they are pushing for at least a play-off place and won’t want to be dropping points against sides like us.”

Newport Manager, Steve Brougham, said:

“We have been showing some good form recently, so our aim is to pick up three more points. But we won’t be going into thinking we can win because of league positions. Derby games are always tough, so we have got to have the right attitude. But basically, this is just another one we need to win to stay up near the top of the table.”

This eagerly-awaited meeting should have taken place during the Christmas break, but was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, and it will be staged at Vics’ ground even though it is technically Newport’s home game. The Port are hoping their problems of finding a temporary home will be resolved soon, with a return to Smallbrook Stadium within a couple of weeks.

Kick off is 7.45pm at Beatrice Avenue, East Cowes.
