A new law banning old bus, coach and lorry tyres from roads has come into force today (February 1), following a campaign by the mother of a teenager killed after leaving Bestival on the Isle of Wight.

Frances Molloy's 18 year old son, Michael, died in 2012 after a 19-year-old tyre blew out on a coach he was in on the A3, near Hindhead.

Michale was on his way home after a weekend spent enjoying the former festival on the Island. Fellow passenger Kerry Ogden and coach driver Colin Daulby, also died in the tragic incident.

Frances said:

"This has been a long campaign over many years, during which we have worked tirelessly to ensure we achieve our objective to protect the public against old tyres that are extremely dangerous and should never be allowed on our roads.

"My son, Michael, was only 18 when his life was cruelly taken due to a 20 year old tyre that was legal.

"With this law in place, we can help ensure it never happens again."

Roads Minister, Baroness Vere, confirmed the change to Maria Eagle MP, whose constituent fought to change the law.

The MP said:

"Hopefully, the new regulations will improve safety on our roads and prevent such catastrophic tyre failures, caused simply by deterioration due to age, leading to more deaths and serious injuries in the future."
