New Government Data Behind Spike In Isle Of Wight Covid Figures

There was confusion yesterday evening (Monday) as the Government website showed 1,297 new daily Covid-19 cases listed for the Isle of Wight.

For context, the daily figures in the seven days to January 25 averaged just over 95 per day, while Sunday (January 30) had seen exactly 100 cases.

The Gov.uk website has today stated that case definition now includes multiple infection episodes, meaning people who have had the virus more than once are included as separate cases.

On the dashboard, this means historical cases by report date have not been revised, so there has been a steep increase in the cumulative numbers of cases.

There is also likely to be a slight increase in the daily totals as they will continue to include the re-infected cases from this point forward.

To help you understand this change, UKHSA has published a news story explaining the changes and the reasons for them.
