New Date For Isle Of Wight's Windeler Cup

The Island Sailing Club's Windeler Cup has been moved back by a month.

It's been created for small keelboats, which are too small to safely participate in Round the Island.

Boats from the Daring, Dragon, Etchells, Flying Fifteen, Mermaid, Redwing, Sunbeam, Swallow, Sonar, Squib, RS Elite, Victory and XOD classes will all compete in the competition.

It will start from the Royal Yacht Squadron line off Cowes, and will follow a course around the Western Solent, taking advantage of favourable tides to finish back on the ISC line in Cowes.

The race has been named the 'Windeler Cup' after Major Cyril Windeler, who created the Round the Island Race in 1931.

The race will now get underway on August 7, rather than July as previously planned.

Meanwhile, the Round the Island race has attracted more than 1130 entries.

Rob Peace, Rear Commodore for Sailing, Island Sailing Club said:

“Whilst we are delighted with the entry numbers for the Round the Island Race, it has been harder to encourage entries for the Windeler Cup.

The feedback has been positive from many classes, but this year has been difficult for new events and competitors have been understandably cautious. The Club is also aware of the additional footfall the day boat classes would generate in the town and wished to reduce this and concentrate on organising the Round the Island Race in a safe and considerate manner.”
