New Coronavirus Restrictions Could Be In Force For Six Months, PM Announces

Restaurants, pubs and bars WILL have to close by 10pm from Thursday, the Prime Minister has announced as he sets out new measures to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Boris Johnson says new rules could be in force for at least six months. Office workers, who can work from home, should do so, according to the Government.

The PM has also confirmed police will have powers to enforce closures of pubs, bars and restaurants if they do not follow the 10pm curfew.

As part of new measures, the Government is also extending the requirement to wear face coverings. It will now apply to retail workers, taxi drivers and to the hospitality industry - except when customers are seated to eat or drink.

Retail and leisure businesses will be fined and could be closed if they breach the rules. People found to have broken rules surrounding masks and the 'rule of six' can now be fined an initial £200.

Mr Johnson says, from Monday, a maximum of 15 people will be able to attend weddings, with 30 being able to attend funerals.

The Government's new 'rule of six' will also now be extended to all indoor adult sports.

Mr Johnson said the new measures are "by no means a return to full lockdown":

"I'm sorry to say, that as in Spain and in many other countries, we have reached a perilous turning point.

"There is a possibility of tens and thousands of new infections next month. A rising proportion of the tests themselves are wielding a positive result.

"The latest data suggests fewer than 8% have the antibodies."

The UK's Covid-19 alert level has already been raised from 3 to 4.

Schools, colleges and universities will stay open and businesses can stay open if they are 'covid compliant'.
