National Conservation Project Celebrates 50,000 Species Landmark

Conservationists are celebrating after the 50,000th species sighting was submitted to the national recording scheme the Record Pool.

The volunteer Hampshire Isle of Wight Amphibian and Reptile Group (HIWARG) works throughout the county to help determine where different species are found to help with conservation efforts.

HIWARG is planning field excursions to the Island throughout the next 12 months and many different sites being surveyed by a dedicated volunteer survey team from the group.

The group is urging members of the public to join in and submit their sightings from their gardens, allotments, nature reserves and parks.

If people see frogspawn in garden ponds, reptiles in compost bins, and on trips out and about the countryside they can submit a photo and details to the Record Pool.

Jon Cranfield, HIWARG Recording Officer, said:

“It is a great way of letting local conservation groups know where animals are in the different habitats across the county.

"Even when you are outside the county, say on a staycation holiday or trip, you can report sightings through the web-based app to help local groups up and down the country”.

Further details of the group can be found online.
