Mountbatten's Walk The Wight Goes Ahead After Volunteers Step Forward

Mountbatten's Walk The Wight will go-ahead today (Sunday) after their were doubts about the event going ahead earlier this week.

As previously reported by Isle of Wight Radio, there were concerns it might be cancelled after so few volunteers came forward.

It needs around 200 to be able to go ahead. Following an appeal last week from Isle of Wight Radio, more than 100 Islanders stepped up.

The annual event had to take place virtually last year because of the pandemic, and this year it is happening four months later than usual.

Walkers can take on all 26 miles across the Island, from Bembridge to The Needles, or walk half the main route, either Bembridge to Carisbrooke or Carisbrooke to The Needles.

The eight-mile Flat Walk along the cycle path from Sandown to Newport is also available, or if people prefer, there is still the option of clocking up miles in their own way, following its success last year during lockdown.

Nigel Hartley, Mountbatten CEO said:

“We always knew this year would be a bit different but Walk the Wight is so vital to us, we are determined to make it as successful as we possibly can.

“It is our biggest fundraising event and we need people to get behind it.

“Our fundraising income, generally, is down by 30 per cent compared to other years and we have to do all we can to make up the shortfall.

“The more support we have for Walk the Wight, the better our chances of doing that.

“From the bottom of our hearts, I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone in our incredible Island community who has come forward to help us.

“We have faced so many challenges this year but we were always absolutely determined to organise Walk the Wight because it is so important to us.

“To everyone who has come forward, and to those already volunteering on the day, thank you so much.”

The walk starts at Bembridge at 6am.

People can sign up on the day between 6am and 8am.

Walkers preferring to walk the second half can register at Carisbrooke between 8am and 12pm or the Flat Walk at Sandown from 8am till 10am.
