More Details Unveiled For Tesco's New Newport Store

A new Tesco Express store in the centre of Newport may sell alcohol from 6am to midnight, every day of the week.

Permission is being sought, as more detail about the new store for Newport High Street is unveiled.

The supermarket giant plans to move into the former Laura Ashley shop, on the corner of St Thomas’s Square.

In recent weeks, proposals have been submitted by Tesco to join together 35 and 36 Newport High Street to provide its sixth Island branch.

Detailed plans have been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council requesting signs – some of which will be lit up – as well as fascia panels, vinyl advertising posters and window frosting.

View the plans, 22/01244/ADV, on the council’s planning register. Comments can be submitted until August 26.

A licensing application has also been submitted by Tesco, which seeks permission to supply alcohol all hours the store will be open — between 6am and midnight.

You can view the licensing application and have your say on the council’s licensing register until August 26 by searching 22/01104/LAPNEW.

No official date has been confirmed for when the branch could open and work has not yet started in the High Street shop.

The shop has been empty since homeware and clothing store Laura Ashley moved out, in 2020, when the national retailers saw administrators appointed due to pressures created by the Covid pandemic.

Tesco already has stores in Wootton, Lake, Ventnor, Ryde and Freshwater.
